Vegware :: Compostable Tableware | |
Currently, huge volumes of paper, plastic and styrofoam cutlery, tableware and food packaging are used and disposed of each year. However, technological developments in the area of bioplastics and fibre processing mean that a new range of alternatives based on safe, biodegradable, and annually renewable raw materials are available. Add to this the fact that a large amount of the waste we generate is suitable for commercial composting - though the economics of sorting different types of waste means that it is disposed of as landfill instead. A switch to compostable foodware and packaging would remove the economic barrier to composting, as food waste, packaging, and tableware could simply be processed together.

BPI approves Vegware compostable hot and cold cups.Vegware has held Din Certco and Ok Compost certification for hot cups and PLA products respectively since mid-2009. These items have now been approved by the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI), giving consumers and businesses alike confidence that Vegware US is their trusted source of compostable packaging in the US.
The plates and bowls are made from bagasse, the waste fibre from pressing sugar cane. Normally the fibres are burned as fuel, though the power yield is low and the process is polluting. As with our take-out boxes, these plates and bowls are pressed in a high-heat, high-pressure process. The result is an economic and sturdy selection of tableware which is more rigid in service than paper plates or bowls, can take hot, wet or oily foods, and is compostable after use Can I heat food in a microwave on a compostable plate or bowl or in the take-out boxes?
How long will compostable plates, cups, and bowls take to break down?
